In memory of John Paul II

VATICAN CITY, Saturday , April 3, 2010 ( ZENIT.org ) .- Here is the memory of the five years since the death of John Paul II who shared Giovanni Maria Vian, director of "L'Osservatore Romano ".

Five years after the death of John Paul II, the anniversary falls on the holiest days of the Christian calendar like to emphasize not only its association with the passion of Christ during the moving physical decline of his last weeks of life on earth, and especially their faithfulness in following the Lord throughout his life. Benedict XVI remembered in the homily at the Mass for the repose of the Polish Pope - "great Pole" called it "choosing" to profile key "two comparisons scriptural.

The first is the strength of the "servant of God" in the book of Isaiah, that Benedict XVI was reflected in the proclamation of the right by Pope Wojtyla "especially when it was faced with resistance, hostility and rejections. " The second comparison is the one that evoked the Pope to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of his election and ponder the radical question of Jesus to Peter: "Do you love me? Do you love me more than these?". Words that John Paul II entrusted to the Apostle had said - "Lord you know everything you know I love you" - and said he was aware both of human frailty and the responsibilities that Christ himself had given him.

Elected to the See of Rome in a relatively young age, the Slavic pope was imposed soon as one of the protagonists of the last two decades of the twentieth century, fully assuming the task he had glimpsed the Polish Primate Stefan Wyszynski: to "introduce the Church into the third millennium." It was the same Pope who remembered in his will, a text written in several stages, but always during the Lenten spiritual exercises "which documents his mystical vision of history and his personal journey, bold and dramatic. At times he himself defined "Extremely difficult and rough" among cruel persecution, the attempt on his life, the fear of nuclear conflict and, after the fall of European communism, "new problems and difficulties."

enormous number of men and women in the Catholic Church and outside its visible confines, they retain a vivid memory of Pope Wojtyla, particularly his strength and tenacity, he held until the last days of his earthly life, and which knew how to present and visible the message of Christ throughout the world, making it everywhere, as Benedict XVI happily summarized in "traveling companion of man today." Special way travel through many countries, which were first visited by a Successor of Peter, following in the footsteps of Paul VI, Pope after the pilgrimage to the Holy Land traveled to five continents.

In his will, John Paul II, as well as the importance given to the cause of the "salvation of men" and the "safeguarding of the human family," stated
in medio Ecclesiae debtor by the "great gift" of the Council, convinced of the need to do, need to define "very great cause" that served during his pontificate. In the custody of the faith is presented as one of the main features: "Express" reads the text, my deepest hope that, despite all my weakness, the Lord will grant me every necessary grace to face as his will any task, trial and suffering. " He continues: "I also hope that never allow, through any action of mine: words, deeds or omissions, to betray my obligations in this holy seat of Peter."

This service is provided without reservations to the unity of the Church, Pope Wojtyla wanted to have at his side, from its early years, Joseph Ratzinger, whom Paul VI had made a cardinal in his last session and is now his successor. In the continuity that characterized among the various vicissitudes of history and natural diversity of the people, the vocation and history of the Church of Rome.
